Master's Flow Chart

Master's (Non-Thesis) & Ed.S. Track

Designed for students in professional or course-based programs.

Phase 1: Planning & Registration

  • Action: Meet regularly with your assigned faculty advisor to discuss program requirements, timeline to completion and your Graduation Planning System (GPS) audit.  If course registration permits and/or overrides are needed, your advisor will help you secure them.

Phase 2: Final Semester & Graduation

  • Deadline: By the first Friday of the semester you intend to graduate
  • Action: Apply for Graduation via Flashline
  • Timeline Reminders:
    • Master's Degrees: Usually completed in 1 to 6 years; the strict limit is 6 years
    • Ed.S. Degrees: Must be completed within 5 years

Master's (Thesis) Track

Designed for students conducting original research and defending a thesis or project.

Phase 1: Advisory & Committee Setup

  • Coursework Milestone: Meet regularly with your assigned faculty advisor to discuss program requirements, timeline to completion and your Graduation Planning System (GPS) audit.  If course registration permits and/or overrides are needed, your advisor will help you secure them.
  • Proposal Phase: Once your committee is set and you have defended your proposal, file the Notification of Approved Master's Thesis or Master's Project Committee & Proposal form
  • IRB Requirement: Include IRB approval with your proposal form, if applicable

Phase 2: Graduation Application

  • Deadline: By the first Friday of your final semester
  • Action: Apply for Graduation via Flashline
  • Note: Your Committee/Proposal form must be submitted with or before this application

Phase 3: Defense & Final Submission

  • Review Deadlines: Monitor the EHS Graduate Student Services Important Dates for specific defense deadlines
  • After Defense: File the Thesis or Project Report of Oral Defense form
  • Final Steps: 
    • Make revisions by specified deadline and obtain approval from advisor to upload thesis by initiating the Thesis Approval form
    • Upload your final thesis to the OhioLink ETD Center
    • If the Vacca Office of Student Services requests further corrections, follow their instructions and resubmit to OhioLink
