Lithium Battery Safety: What You Need to Know on Campus

Battery Image

From laptops and smartphones to e-bikes and scooters, lithium-ion batteries power much of our daily lives. But did you know that improper use or disposal of these batteries can pose serious safety risks?

As part of our commitment to campus safety and sustainability, we鈥檙e raising awareness about how to use and handle lithium batteries responsibly.

Why It Matters

Lithium-ion batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode if damaged or misused. Fires caused by these batteries are fast-burning and difficult to extinguish, making prevention critical.

Top Safety Tips

  • Use the right charger. Always use the manufacturer-recommended charger for your device.  When charging, charge on a hard surface like a desktop, not on a soft surface like a blanket or jacket.
  • Don鈥檛 charge overnight. Avoid charging devices unattended or while sleeping.
  • Watch for warning signs. Swelling, overheating, or strange smells are signs of battery failure鈥攕top using the device immediately.
  • Store safely. Keep batteries away from heat sources and direct sunlight.  E-Bikes should not be stored in residence halls or campus buildings due to fire hazard.
  • Recycle properly. Never throw batteries in the trash.  Dispose at appropriate drop off site.  Many retailers like Lowe鈥檚 or Home Depot accept these batteries at no cost.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you suspect a battery is overheating or see smoke:

  • Move away from the device.
  • Alert others nearby.
  • Call campus safety or 911 immediately.
